Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies covers the history, heritage and culture of [historically-marginalized] groups whose contributions have been long-overlooked and whose struggles to gain rights and fight injustice have been long silenced. The intent is to build empathy and understanding and to empower students to see their stories reflected in what they study in school. Ethnic Studies curriculum should draw attention to the four ethnic and racial groups whose history and stories have been traditionally overlooked and have been the focus of college ethnic studies courses: Blacks, Latinos, Native Americans and Asian Americans. Our SCUSDcurriculum does that while also including discussions on the ethnic heritage and the legacies of students in their communities. Our curriculum includes lesson plans on Sikh, Jewish, Arab and Armenian Americans.
