BSC Physics in the Universe
What students say
Catalog description
BSC Physics in the Universe is a year-long college preparatory laboratory physical science class integrating physics with earth and space science. Guided by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), students explore real-world phenomena in 6 major areas of focus: In Forces and Motion students use Newton’s laws to understand collisions; students explore gravity and electromagnetism in Forces at a Distance; electric power generation and energy transformations are explored with an eye to renewable energy; students develop a model of how the internal structure of the atom changes during nuclear processes, how these changes release energy, and how these processes are the timekeepers of geologic history; earthquakes are a tangible phenomenon that introduce the study of waves; and students analyze patterns in stellar spectra to understand electromagnetic waves and gather evidence about how stars work and the history of the universe. Students will work on projects which demonstrate their mastery of course, regularly conduct experimental investigations, and participate in engineering practices as they use physics to understand the universe and their place in it. Students with active IEPs will receive appropriate modifications and accommodations to access the curriculum described above.
This course is designed to be aligned with state standards using an alternative curriculum to access the standards. Areas to be covered include Life, Earth, and Physical science curriculum tied to functional life skills within the community. Instruction includes classroom activities as well as school-based and community outings to generalize skills and make connections to the content. Students with active IEPs will receive appropriate modifications and accommodations to access the curriculum described above.
