BSC Biology of the Living Earth

BSC Biology of the Living Earth is a year-long laboratory life science class based on the Next Generation Science Standards which builds basic student competency in Science and Engineering Practices and Cross-Cutting Concepts with an eye on the Environmental Principles and Concepts. Students investigate real-world phenomena integrating biology and earth science concepts in 6 major areas of focus: ecosystem interactions and energy; history of earth’s atmosphere: photosynthesis and respiration; evidence of evolution; inheritance of traits; structure, function, and growth (from cells to organisms); and ecosystem stability & the response to climate change. Student-centered laboratory activities will emphasize the process of inquiry and critical thinking. Students with active IEPs will receive appropriate modifications and accommodations to access the curriculum described above.

This course is designed to be aligned with state standards using an alternative curriculum to access the standards. Areas to be covered include Life, Earth, and Physical science curriculum tied to functional life skills within the community. Instruction includes classroom activities as well as school-based and community outings to generalize skills and make connections to the content. Students with active IEPs will receive appropriate modifications and accommodations to access the curriculum described above.
